Eric,
I have a 40 GB ipod, after charging the battery with my lap top i picked it up and noticed that the ipod was very hot. I had set the ipod down on the tabble next to my lap top figuring it safe enough. Apon trying to down load more music the screen with the sad ipod and an exclamation next to it. Thats when the ipod started makin noise and wouldnt boot up. Now all that happens is apple screen then this sad ipod then the ipod shuts down.

I’ve had iPod’s heat up on me after reassembling them. I can’t say definitively what the problem is, but the first thing I would do is reseat the hard drive.
